Thank you for your interest in The Math and Science Academy of Apex: TMSA Apex!

We are TMSA’s newest K-8 school in Apex, NC and modeled after TMSA’s high-achieving school Triangle Math and Science Academy (TMSA Cary) that is ranked among the best public schools in North Carolina.

We are a tuition-free public charter school focusing on rigorous STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum and character education. We will open in Fall 2022 for K-5 and gradually grow by one grade level per year until we serve 800 K-8 students.

We do not discriminate against students on the basis of sex, national origin, ethnicity, religion, disability, academic, artistic, athletic ability. We are an open enrollment school and admit any child who qualifies to attend a public school in North Carolina regardless of the school district the child resides in the state.

New families are required to submit an initial application due to the limited spots available in our school.

Apply to The Math and Science Academy of Apex - TMSA Apex (K-5) for the 2022-2023 school year.

Please note that the initial application is for new students only.

*If you want to apply to both TMSA Apex (K-5) and Triangle Math and Science Academy (K-12), you need to create a new account for the secondary application.

We accept applications year-round. However, due to the high demand for our school, we recommend new families to apply to the school between November and mid-February for the upcoming school year.

TMSA schools receive hundreds of applications every year beyond the number of seats available at any grade level. We conduct a lottery in every February to fill the seats in a fair and equitable way. Our lottery is publicly undertaken and may be attended by any member of the public.

We randomly select names or numbers through PowerSchool registration software. Once all available seats are filled, a waitlist will be established by listing the students in the order drawn. Multiple birth siblings will enter the lottery as one name or number, parents only need to submit one application. If that name or number is selected, then all of the multiple birth siblings shall be admitted. Additional siblings applying to TMSA at the same time MUST complete a separate application.

Late applications after the scheduled lottery will be placed on the bottom of the waitlist.

TMSA Apex gives enrollment priority to qualified applicants to fill the available seats ahead of applicants without priority status. The eligible applicants, in the order listed, are:

1) children of employees and governing board members (by law, these students cannot amount to more than 15% of the school's total enrollment) and,
2) siblings of enrolled students (by law, siblings include half-siblings, step-siblings, and children residing in a family foster home).

TMSA Apex provides a "weighted lottery" process to students who meet the "educationally disadvantaged" criteria. Educationally disadvantaged is defined as:

  • Students who are economically disadvantaged,
  • Students with disabilities,
  • English learners,
  • Unaccompanied youth or students experiencing homelessness,
  • Migrant students,
  • Immigrant students.

The weighted lottery is separate from the general lottery process and families who do not qualify or choose to not participate will not have their chances in the general lottery altered. If you would like to be considered for the weighted lottery, please indicate "Yes" on the initial application. For more details about the weighted lottery process, please contact the school.

The lottery results are emailed to the winning applicants.

Applicants who receive a seat at TMSA Apex will need to complete the necessary forms to enroll within the given two-week period. If the applicant does not notify the school of its acceptance of admission on time, the applicant will be deemed to have declined admission, and the first child on the waitlist will be offered admission.

The following items are needed in order to complete the enrollment process. If applicants do not have some of these documents available immediately, such as EOG test results or kindergarten physical exam, they can be submitted at a later time, but you MUST communicate with the school.

  • Government-issued photo ID for parent/guardian,
  • Copy of student birth certificate,
  • NC proof of residency through the utility bill, mortgage/lease document, etc.
  • Immunization records,
  • Guardianship/custody papers, if applicable,
