The State Board of Education Approves Triangle's Request to Relocate High School in Apex for 2022-2023
Cary, NC - The North Carolina State Board of Education has approved Triangle Math and Science Academy's request to relocate the high school to a new campus that will be constructed in Apex - 9 miles away from the current K-12 campus in Cary.
The school has focused on the site at 400 New Hill Olive Chapel Rd in Apex and is now performing due diligence procedures with the City of Apex.
The new campus is expected to open for the 2022-2023 school year. It will accommodate up to 800 high school students from Triangle's long waitlist of more than a couple thousand.
After the relocation, the Cary campus, now serving more than 900 students, will only serve elementary and middle school students.
Triangle Math and Science Academy has endured numerous growing pains since opening as a K-6 school in Raleigh in 2012. A year later, the school moved to the Cary campus and added a grade to the student population each year.
"The Cary campus is not enough for us to fully implement our high school program," said TMSA Public Charter Schools Superintendent Ben Karaduman with great excitement for the recent approval. "Plus, we have had a growing waitlist of over 2,000 students and very few seats to offer in our lottery," he added. Finding a larger and more suitable campus site for Triangle's High School has been a pressing issue for the past couple of years.
The new campus will be stretching across 13 acres of land and host a 72,000 square-foot building with 50 classroom-labs along with a gymnasium and outdoor fields.
"The new campus will be like a three-dimensional textbook; Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics will come alive for the students," said TMSA Public Charter Schools Deputy Superintendent Eray Idil. "It will also be a center for the community that provides a place for people to meet and develop new ideas."
Triangle Math and Science Academy enjoys a strong academic reputation. It is one of the top-performing high schools in North Carolina with "A" or higher school performance grades since the state started to report school performance grades in 2013-2014. It is also recognized by Niche as a top charter high school in the state, coming in at 10th place on the 2020 list.
The high demand for TMSA's proven educational model has led TMSA Board of Directors to apply for a new K-8 replication school in the new Apex Campus. "The Charter School Advisory Board has approved our application unanimously and recommended it to the State Board of Education," said Mr. Karaduman. The State Board of Education will vote on the new K-8 school in April.
Triangle has been recognized as a "Distinguished School" by the Project Lead the Way Organization. Distinguished schools are recognized for their commitment to increasing access to the curriculum and their dedication to increasing engagement and student achievement. There are only three other distinguished schools within 100 miles of Triangle Math and Science Academy.
Triangle is a part of TMSA Public Charter Schools, along with Greensboro's Triad Math and Science Academy and Charlotte's Queen City STEM School.
